Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the CCMA, CMA, and RMA?

They're all medical assistant credentials -- just from different certifying bodies. The CCMA comes from the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), the CMA is issued by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), and the RMA is from American Medical Technologists (AMT). All three are widely accepted by employers, though some clinics or hospital systems prefer one over the others. Check local job postings to see which credential employers in your area list most often.

Who's eligible to sit for a medical assistant certification?

Eligibility varies a bit. The AAMA's CMA requires graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited MA program. The NHA CCMA accepts graduates of an MA training program OR candidates with one year of supervised work experience in the field within the last three years. The AMT RMA has multiple pathways including formal training, military training, or several years of work experience. Always confirm current requirements directly with the certifying body before you apply.

How much does the medical assistant exam cost?

Plan on $115 to $155 depending on which certification you take. The NHA CCMA runs around $155, the AAMA CMA is about $125 for recent graduates of accredited programs, and the AMT RMA sits near $120. Some employers reimburse the fee, and many MA training programs include the first attempt in tuition -- ask before you pay out of pocket.

What if I don't pass on the first try?

You can retake it, but each body has its own waiting period and limits. NHA generally requires a 30-day wait for the second and third attempts, with longer waits after that. AAMA allows up to three total attempts and typically requires waiting at least 90 days between tries. You'll pay a retake fee each time, so it pays to study thoroughly the first time around.

How often do I need to recertify, and what about CEUs?

Most MA certifications require recertification every two to five years. NHA CCMA holders need 10 CEUs every two years. AAMA CMAs recertify every 60 months with 60 contact hours, or by retaking the exam. AMT requires CCP (Certification Continuation Program) points annually. CEUs can come from online courses, in-service training at your job, or industry conferences.

What's actually in a medical assistant's scope of practice?

MAs do both clinical and administrative work. On the clinical side: vitals, phlebotomy, injections, EKGs, assisting with minor procedures, patient education, and prepping exam rooms. Administrative duties include scheduling, insurance verification, basic billing, medical records, and front-desk reception. Scope varies by state law and by what the supervising physician delegates -- some states allow MAs to do more (like administering certain medications) than others.

How long should I study for the medical assistant exam?

Most candidates spend 4 to 8 weeks of focused prep, especially if it's been a while since they finished their MA program. If you just graduated, two to three weeks of focused review may be enough. Spend the first week diagnosing weak areas with a practice test, then drill those topics. Clinical procedures, medical terminology, pharmacology basics, and HIPAA tend to trip people up most often.

Is the CCMA harder than the CMA?

Neither is universally 'harder' -- they cover similar content but weight topics a little differently. The AAMA CMA leans slightly more toward general medical knowledge and psychology, while the NHA CCMA places heavy emphasis on clinical patient care and EKG/phlebotomy procedures. Pass rates are roughly comparable. Pick the one that matches your training background and what local employers prefer.
