The Official UMD GPA Scale Explained
So how does UMD calculate GPA exactly? The University of Maryland uses a plus/minus grading system on a standard 4.0 scale. Here's something worth knowing - UMD does award A+ grades, but they carry the same 4.0 points as a regular A. The UMD GPA scale below shows every grade and its corresponding point value.
Our UMD GPA calculator uses this exact scale - the same formula Testudo uses when it spits out your official GPA each semester.

Important Notes About UMD Grades
- •A+ Grade: UMD awards A+ but it still carries 4.0 grade points - same as a regular A
- •Pass/Fail: P/F courses don't factor into your GPA calculation at all
- •W (Withdrawal): Withdrawals don't affect GPA but do appear on your transcript
- •XF (Academic Dishonesty): Counts as 0.0 and is included in your GPA - much worse than a regular F

Understanding UMD GPA Requirements
Your GPA at the University of Maryland matters more than you probably think. Whether you're gunning for Dean's List, trying to lock down a competitive internship in DC, or applying to grad school - the number on your transcript carries real weight at a school like Maryland.
UMD GPA requirements vary depending on what you're after. Graduation? You need a 2.0 minimum cumulative GPA. Dean's List? That's a 3.5 semester GPA with at least 12 graded credits. And if you're in the Smith School of Business, Clark Engineering, or any of the limited enrollment programs? The bar is usually higher than the university minimum.
Here's something a lot of Terps don't know: UMD allows grade replacement for up to 18 credits of repeated coursework. So if you struggled through MATH 141 or CHEM 131 freshman year, you can retake it and only the new grade counts toward your GPA. That policy is a lifesaver. Use this UMD GPA calculator to figure out exactly how much a retake would help your cumulative GPA before you register.
For high school students wondering what GPA you need to get into UMD - the average admitted GPA is around 4.3 weighted. But once you're enrolled at College Park, this calculator uses the official UMD GPA system for your college grades.

Why Your UMD GPA Matters More Than You Think
For Engineering & CS Students
The Clark School of Engineering at UMD is no joke. Computer science, electrical engineering, aerospace - these programs are competitive and the coursework reflects it. Many limited enrollment programs require a minimum GPA in gateway courses just to continue in the major. Tracking your UMD GPA regularly (not just at the end of the semester) can help you catch problems early and adjust before it's too late. Our Georgia Tech GPA calculator is another popular tool for engineering students comparing programs.
For Business Students
The Robert H. Smith School of Business is one of the top business schools on the East Coast. Getting into and staying in Smith requires maintaining solid grades - and the competition for internships at Big Four firms, consulting companies, and DC area corporations is intense. A strong GPA at UMD opens doors that would otherwise stay shut. Period.
For Graduate School Applications
Thinking about grad school? Your UMD cumulative GPA is one of the first things admissions committees look at. Most competitive programs want 3.3 or higher, with top-tier schools expecting 3.5+. Use our UMD GPA calculator to project where you'll end up by graduation. Planning ahead beats panicking later - trust me on that one. You might also find our LSAC GPA calculator useful if you're considering law school.
For Scholarships & Financial Aid
Plenty of UMD scholarships have GPA thresholds for renewal. Drop below the requirement and you could lose thousands in funding - sometimes without much warning. The "what if" feature in our GPA calculator lets you play out different grade scenarios so you know exactly what you need to hit your target. It's sort of like a safety net for your financial aid.
How Does UMD Recalculate GPA?
Had a rough semester? It happens. The good news is UMD has some policies that can help you recover. Here's how the University of Maryland handles GPA recalculation in different scenarios:
Grade Replacement (Repeat Policy)
UMD lets you repeat up to 18 credits worth of courses and replace the old grade with the new one in your GPA calculation. Both grades stay on your transcript (they don't disappear), but only the most recent attempt counts toward your GPA. This is probably the single best tool you have for recovering from a bad grade. Use our UMD GPA calculator to see exactly how much a retake would boost your cumulative GPA.
Incomplete Grades
An "I" (Incomplete) grade at UMD isn't calculated into your GPA while it's pending. Once you finish the remaining work and receive a letter grade, UMD recalculates your GPA to include that course. If you don't complete the work within the deadline, the Incomplete typically converts to an F - which definitely hits your GPA hard.
Transfer Credits
Credits you transfer into UMD from another institution generally don't count toward your UMD GPA. They count for degree progress and credit requirements, but the grades stay at your previous school. Your UMD GPA only reflects coursework completed at College Park (or through UMD-affiliated programs).
Where Do I Find My GPA at UMD?
Need to check your official University of Maryland GPA? Here's exactly where to look:
- 1Log into Testudo - Head to testudo.umd.edu and sign in with your UMD Directory ID and password
- 2Navigate to Your Records - Find the "Unofficial Transcript" or "Academic History" section
- 3View Your GPA - Your semester GPA and cumulative GPA will be displayed for each term
Pro tip: Use our UMD GPA calculator to estimate your grades before they're posted on Testudo. Way less stressful than refreshing the page during finals week, right?
UMD Average GPA by Major - What to Expect
Not all GPAs at Maryland are created equal. A 3.2 in computer science carries different weight than a 3.2 in communications - and employers and grad schools generally know that. The UMD GPA distribution varies pretty significantly across departments.
STEM majors at UMD tend to have lower average GPAs overall. Think about it - courses like CMSC 132, PHYS 271, or CHEM 231 are notorious for being curve-dependent with lower class averages. Meanwhile, humanities and social science courses at Maryland sometimes run higher averages. None of this means one path is easier or harder per se, but it does affect your GPA numbers.
What matters more than comparing across majors? Tracking your own progress consistently. Use the UMD GPA calculator above to keep tabs on your semester GPA and cumulative GPA throughout your time at College Park. If you see your GPA trending downward, that's a signal to adjust - maybe talk to an advisor, get online class tutoring, or reconsider your course load for next semester. Similar tools like our UF GPA calculator and Penn State GPA calculator are available for students at other Big Ten schools too.
