Frequently Asked Questions

What is the HazMat endorsement?

The HazMat endorsement, often called the H endorsement, is an add-on to a Commercial Driver's License that allows the holder to transport hazardous materials in quantities that require placarding. To get it, drivers have to pass a written knowledge test at the DMV and also clear a TSA security threat assessment, which includes fingerprinting and a background check. It's not its own license -- it sits on top of an existing CDL.

Do I really need a TSA background check for HazMat?

Yes, and there's no way around it. The Transportation Security Administration requires every applicant for a HazMat endorsement to complete a security threat assessment. You'll submit fingerprints, provide proof of citizenship or lawful permanent residency, and pay a fee (usually around $86.50, though it varies a bit by state). The whole thing can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, so apply early. Don't wait until your CDL renewal is two weeks out.

How should I study placards and labels?

Placards trip up a lot of people, mostly because there are nine hazard classes and each one has its own look and rules. Start with the basics: learn the colors and the class numbers (Class 1 = Explosives, Class 3 = Flammable Liquids, Class 8 = Corrosives, and so on). Then drill flash cards on the diamond shapes and what the symbols mean. The Emergency Response Guidebook is also worth flipping through -- it shows real placards and tells you what to do if something goes wrong. Repetition is your friend here.

How much does the HazMat endorsement actually cost?

The biggest piece is the TSA background check, which runs about $86.50 in most states. On top of that, your state DMV will charge a separate fee for adding the endorsement to your CDL -- this varies, but it's usually somewhere between $10 and $50. Some states also tack on testing fees. If your employer needs you to have HazMat, ask whether they'll reimburse the cost. Many trucking companies will.

How often do I need to renew my HazMat endorsement?

The HazMat endorsement has to be renewed every five years, and that means going through the TSA background check again -- not just the DMV knowledge test. So even if your CDL is good for longer, the H endorsement piece resets on its own clock. Plan ahead: start the renewal process at least 60 to 90 days before your endorsement expires. If it lapses, you can't haul placarded loads until it's reinstated.

Are there any restrictions that come with the HazMat endorsement?

A few. You can't drive through certain tunnels with hazardous loads -- many states and cities post restrictions, and some require permits or specific routes. Parking is also limited; you generally can't park within 5 feet of the road or near bridges, tunnels, or crowded places. And if you're hauling explosives, the attendance rules are strict: somebody has to be with the vehicle pretty much all the time. Knowing these restrictions cold will help you on the test and on the road.

What kinds of jobs need a HazMat endorsement?

Plenty. Tanker drivers hauling fuel, propane, or chemicals almost always need it. So do drivers who deliver to gas stations, propane suppliers, paint manufacturers, fertilizer plants, and oilfield services. Some over-the-road carriers prefer drivers with both HazMat and Tanker endorsements because it opens up a much bigger pool of loads -- and usually pays better. If you're trying to move up in trucking, the H endorsement is one of the most valuable credentials you can add.

Can I take the HazMat test without already having a CDL?

No. The HazMat endorsement is an add-on, not a standalone credential. You have to hold a valid Class A, B, or C CDL first, and then you can apply to add the H endorsement on top of it. Some drivers do study for both at the same time and schedule the tests close together, which is fine -- but the endorsement won't actually be issued until your CDL is in hand and your TSA background check has cleared.
