You are managing a large infrastructure project and have just identified a key stakeholder who was overlooked during the initial stakeholder identification process. This stakeholder has significant influence over regulatory approvals. The project is already 30% complete. What should you do FIRST?

AA) Add the stakeholder to the communications management plan and continue with the current project plan
BB) Analyze the stakeholder's level of interest and influence, then update the stakeholder register and engagement plan
CC) Schedule a meeting with the project sponsor to discuss the impact of this stakeholder on the project timeline
DD) Immediately arrange a meeting with the new stakeholder to present the project scope and progress
2

A project has five activities on the critical path: A (3 days), B (5 days), C (4 days), D (6 days), and E (2 days). Activity F (3 days) runs in parallel to activities C and D with a total float of 4 days. The project sponsor asks you to compress the schedule by 3 days. What is the BEST approach?

AA) Crash Activity F since it has float available
BB) Fast-track activities on the critical path by overlapping them where dependencies allow
CC) Remove Activity E from the project scope since it has the shortest duration
DD) Add float to the critical path activities to create scheduling flexibility
3

During project execution, a team member identifies a risk that could delay a critical deliverable by two weeks. The risk has a 40% probability of occurring. The estimated cost impact if it occurs is $50,000. The team proposes a mitigation strategy costing $15,000 that would reduce the probability to 10%. What is the expected monetary value (EMV) of the risk BEFORE mitigation?

AA) $50,000
BB) $20,000
CC) $15,000
DD) $5,000
4

You are leading a project where the customer's requirements are evolving rapidly, and the technology is relatively new to your team. The project sponsor wants a detailed, fixed-scope plan delivered upfront. What is the MOST appropriate response?

AA) Create a detailed waterfall plan as requested by the sponsor since they are funding the project
BB) Recommend an adaptive approach with iterative planning and regular feedback cycles, and explain the benefits to the sponsor
CC) Refuse to create any plan until all requirements are fully documented and stable
DD) Create a hybrid approach but present only the waterfall plan to keep the sponsor comfortable
5

A project has a Budget at Completion (BAC) of $200,000. At the end of month 4, the Planned Value (PV) is $80,000, the Earned Value (EV) is $70,000, and the Actual Cost (AC) is $90,000. What do the Schedule Performance Index (SPI) and Cost Performance Index (CPI) tell you about this project?

AA) The project is ahead of schedule and under budget
BB) The project is behind schedule and over budget
CC) The project is on schedule but over budget
DD) The project is behind schedule but under budget

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the PMP exam?

The PMP exam has 180 questions total, and you'll get 230 minutes to answer them. But here's the thing - not all 180 questions count toward your score. PMI includes unscored pretest questions mixed in, and you won't know which ones they are. So treat every question like it matters, because you genuinely can't tell the difference.

What is the PMP passing score?

PMI doesn't publish a specific passing score or percentage. Instead, your results come back as Above Target, Target, Below Target, or Needs Improvement across three domains - People, Process, and Business Environment. You need to perform at or above the Target level overall. It's a bit vague, honestly, but most experts estimate you need to get roughly 60-70% of scored questions right.

How hard is the PMP exam?

Let's be real - the PMP is considered one of the more challenging professional certifications out there. It's not just about memorizing processes and knowledge areas. The questions are situational and scenario-based, meaning you need to actually understand how to apply concepts in real-world project scenarios. Most people spend 2-3 months studying before they feel ready.

How much does the PMP exam cost?

If you're a PMI member, the exam fee is $405. Non-members pay $555. PMI membership itself costs $139 per year, so if you're not already a member, it actually saves you money to join first and then register for the exam. You'd pay $139 + $405 = $544 total instead of $555. Not a huge difference, but you also get access to PMI resources and the PMBOK Guide.

What are the PMP eligibility requirements?

You need either a four-year degree with 36 months of project management experience AND 35 hours of PM education, or a high school diploma with 60 months of project management experience AND 35 hours of PM education. The 35 contact hours of project management education can come from courses, workshops, or training programs. PMI does audit some applications randomly, so keep your documentation handy.

How long should I study for the PMP?

Most successful candidates study for about 2 to 3 months, dedicating 1-2 hours per day. But this really depends on your background. If you've been managing projects for years, you might need less time. If project management concepts are newer to you, budget closer to 3-4 months. Practice questions are probably the single most effective study tool - they help you get used to the scenario-based format PMI loves.

Is PMP certification worth it?

For most project managers, yes. PMI's own salary survey shows PMP holders earn about 33% more on average than non-certified project managers. Beyond the salary bump, many employers specifically look for PMP certification when hiring for PM roles. It's recognized globally across industries. That said, it does require ongoing effort - you need to earn 60 PDUs every three years to maintain it.
