Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PTCB Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam?

The PTCE is the national certification test from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. Passing it earns you the CPhT credential, which many employers and states require or prefer. It checks that you can support pharmacists safely in retail, hospital, and other settings.

How many questions are on the PTCE?

The PTCE has 90 multiple-choice questions, and 80 of them are scored. The other 10 are unscored pretest items, and you won't know which ones they are. You get 1 hour and 50 minutes to finish.

What topics does the PTCE cover?

The content is split into four domains: Medications, Federal Requirements, Patient Safety and Quality Assurance, and Order Entry and Processing. Medications carries the biggest share. Expect pharmacy tech certification questions on drug classes, laws, error prevention, and pharmacy math.

What score do I need to pass?

The PTCE is scored on a scale of 1,000 to 1,600, and 1,400 is the passing score. Your result is scaled, so it isn't a simple percentage of correct answers. You'll see a pass or fail result right after you finish at the testing center.

How much does the PTCE cost?

The exam fee is $129 as of 2026. Some employers reimburse it, so ask before you pay out of pocket. Rescheduling or retaking will cost extra.

Can I use a calculator on the PTCE?

Yes, an on-screen calculator is built into the test software. You still need to know the formulas, though, because the calculator won't set up the problem for you. Practice ratio-proportion, days' supply, and dilution problems by hand first.

How should I use pharmacy technician practice questions?

Do a short set each day and read every explanation, even for the ones you got right. Track which domain trips you up most, then spend extra time there. Mixing law, safety, and math questions in one session mimics the real test better than studying one topic at a time.

How soon can I retake the PTCE if I don't pass?

You can retake it, but PTCB limits attempts. You wait 60 days before a second try and 6 months before later attempts, and there's a cap of four total attempts. Use the gap to rebuild your weakest domains.
