Frequently Asked Questions

What math topics are on the HiSET?

The HiSET Mathematics subtest covers a pretty wide range of topics. You'll see questions on numbers and operations, measurement and geometry, data analysis and probability, and algebraic concepts. Roughly half the questions focus on algebra and number sense, while the rest split between geometry and data interpretation.

How many math questions are on the HiSET?

There are 55 multiple-choice questions on the HiSET Math subtest, and you get 90 minutes to finish them all. That works out to roughly a minute and a half per question - so pacing yourself is really important. Don't spend too long on any single problem.

Can I use a calculator on the HiSET math test?

Yes, you're allowed to use a calculator on the HiSET Mathematics subtest - but only the one provided at the testing center. It's typically a basic four-function or scientific calculator. You can't bring your own, and graphing calculators aren't permitted. Still, some questions are designed to be solved without one, so brush up on mental math too.

What score do I need to pass HiSET math?

You need at least an 8 out of 20 on the scaled score to pass the HiSET Mathematics subtest. That's the minimum for each individual subtest. Keep in mind you also need a combined total score of at least 45 across all five subtests, with at least a 2 out of 6 on the essay portion.

Is HiSET math harder than GED math?

This one's honestly debatable, and it kind of depends on your strengths. The HiSET math tends to be a bit more straightforward in its question format - it's all multiple choice, whereas the GED has some fill-in-the-blank and drag-and-drop items. However, the HiSET may cover certain algebra topics a touch more deeply. Most students find the two roughly comparable in difficulty.

How should I study for HiSET math?

Start by taking a practice test to figure out where you stand. Focus your study time on weak areas rather than reviewing stuff you already know well. For most people, algebra and fractions need the most attention. Work through practice problems daily - even 20-30 minutes of consistent practice makes a real difference. And don't skip the word problems, because those trip up a lot of test takers.

What kind of math formulas should I know for the HiSET?

Good news here - the HiSET provides a formula sheet during the test, so you don't need to memorize everything. It includes formulas for area, perimeter, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem. That said, you should be comfortable using those formulas quickly, and you'll want to have basics like order of operations and fraction rules down cold since those aren't on the sheet.
