Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Series 6?

The Series 6, officially called the Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products Representative Qualification Examination, is a FINRA qualification assessment for entry-level representatives who work with investment company products and variable contracts. Passing it helps qualify a representative to sell products such as mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance, unit investment trusts, and municipal fund securities like 529 plans.

How many questions are on the Series 6?

FINRA lists 50 multiple-choice items on the Series 6. The content is organized around four job functions: seeking business, opening accounts, providing information and recommendations, and processing customer purchase and sale instructions. Since the largest section focuses on recommendations and customer information, your series 6 practice test routine should spend plenty of time on product features, risks, suitability, and recordkeeping.

How long is the Series 6?

The Series 6 time limit is 1 hour and 30 minutes. That gives you a little under two minutes per question, which is comfortable if you know the material but tight if you have to reread every scenario. Practice in timed sets so the wording starts to feel familiar before test day.

What score do I need to pass the Series 6?

You need a 70% passing score on the Series 6. Don't aim for exactly 70 in practice, though. Build a cushion by reviewing every missed explanation and retesting weak areas until you can explain why the right answer works and why the other choices fall short.

Do I need the SIE before the Series 6?

Yes. The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) is a corequisite for the Series 6 registration. You must pass both the SIE and the Series 6 to obtain the Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products registration. Many candidates take the SIE first because it covers the broader foundation, then move into Series 6-specific products and customer scenarios.

Do I need firm sponsorship for the Series 6?

Yes. FINRA representative-level qualification exams, including the Series 6, require association with and sponsorship by a FINRA member firm or another applicable self-regulatory organization member firm. That is different from the SIE, which can be taken without firm sponsorship.

What products can a Series 6 representative sell?

A Series 6 representative can work with a limited group of packaged products: mutual funds, closed-end funds on the initial offering only, variable annuities, variable life insurance, unit investment trusts, and municipal fund securities such as 529 plans. The license does not cover individual stocks, corporate bonds, municipal bonds, direct participation programs, or listed options.

How should I use a series 6 practice test free resource?

Use a series 6 practice test free resource after you have reviewed the major product types, then slow down and read the explanations. The goal is not to memorize a few answer letters. You want to recognize how FINRA-style questions test suitability, costs, liquidity, customer objectives, and permitted activities. Short daily sets usually work better than one long cram session.
