Frequently Asked Questions

What is the RBT exam and who administers it?

The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) exam is administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). It's the credentialing exam for paraprofessionals who deliver behavior-analytic services under the supervision of a BCBA or BCaBA. Passing it means you've demonstrated entry-level competency in applying ABA principles.

Do I need to complete training before sitting for the RBT exam?

Yes. The BACB requires you to complete a 40-hour training program based on the RBT Task List before you can apply. The training has to be delivered by a qualified instructor and cover all the major content areas. After training you also need to pass an initial competency assessment with a qualified supervisor.

How much does the RBT exam cost?

The RBT application fee is $50 and the exam itself runs around $45 to $65 through Pearson VUE, depending on your location. Some employers cover one or both of these costs as part of onboarding. It's worth asking before you pay out of pocket.

What topics are covered on the RBT exam?

Questions are drawn from six domains in the RBT Task List: measurement, assessment, skill acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation and reporting, and professional conduct and scope of practice. Most questions are scenario-based, so memorizing definitions alone usually isn't enough -- you need to recognize the procedures in context.

What happens if I fail the RBT exam?

You can retake it, but you have to wait at least 7 days between attempts. You're allowed up to 8 attempts within a one-year authorization window, after which you'd need to reapply. If you don't pass, take time to review the score report and focus on weaker domains before scheduling again.

How often do I have to renew my RBT certification?

RBT certification renews annually. You'll need to complete a renewal competency assessment with your supervisor, attest to ongoing supervision, and pay the renewal fee. Missing the renewal window means going through the application process again, so set a calendar reminder a couple months out.

Do I need a supervisor to maintain my RBT credential?

Yes. RBTs must work under the ongoing supervision of a qualified BCBA, BCaBA, or FL-CBA. The BACB requires a minimum of 5% of your monthly hours to be supervised, with at least two supervision contacts per month. Practicing without supervision puts your certification at risk.

What's the scope of practice for an RBT?

RBTs implement behavior-analytic services designed and overseen by a supervisor. You don't design treatment plans, conduct functional assessments independently, or make clinical decisions on your own. Your role is delivering interventions with fidelity, collecting data, and communicating clearly with your supervising analyst.
