Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Praxis Core?

The Praxis Core Academic Skills assessments measure academic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Many colleges and states require passing Praxis Core scores for entry into teacher education programs. There are three separate assessments: Core Academic Skills for Educators: Reading (5713), Writing (5723), and Mathematics (5733). You can take them individually or as a combined assessment.

What is a passing score for the Praxis Core?

Passing scores vary significantly by state. Common passing scores are: Reading (5713) around 156, Writing (5723) around 162, and Mathematics (5733) around 150. However, some states set higher or lower thresholds. Always check your specific state's requirements through the ETS Praxis website or your state's Department of Education.

How long is the Praxis Core assessment?

Each Praxis Core section has its own time limit. Reading: 85 minutes for 56 questions. Writing: 100 minutes for 40 selected-response questions plus 2 essays. Mathematics: 90 minutes for 56 questions. If you take the combined assessment in one sitting, the total testing time is approximately 5 hours.

Can I use a calculator on the Praxis Core Math?

Yes, a four-function on-screen calculator is provided during the Praxis Core Mathematics assessment. However, you cannot bring your own calculator. The on-screen calculator handles basic operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide, and square root). Getting comfortable with using a basic calculator efficiently is a smart study strategy.

How is the Praxis Core Writing essay scored?

The Praxis Core Writing assessment includes two essay tasks: an argumentative essay and a source-based essay. Each essay is scored by two trained human readers on a scale of 1-6. Your essay scores are combined with your selected-response scores to produce your total Writing score. The essays assess your ability to organize ideas, use evidence, and write clearly.

Can I retake the Praxis Core if I don't pass?

Yes, you can retake any Praxis Core section. You must wait at least 21 days between attempts for the same assessment. There's no limit on the total number of retakes, but each attempt requires a new registration and fee. If you only failed one section, you only need to retake that specific section.
