Frequently Asked Questions

What topics are covered on the GED Math section?

The GED Mathematical Reasoning section covers two main areas: Quantitative Reasoning (about 45% of questions) and Algebraic Reasoning (about 55% of questions). Quantitative Reasoning includes number operations, ratios, proportions, percentages, data analysis, and geometry. Algebraic Reasoning includes expressions, equations, inequalities, functions, and patterns. About 40% of questions involve real-world scenarios.

Can I use a calculator on the GED Math section?

Yes -- for most of it. The GED Math section is split into two parts. The first part (about 5 questions) does NOT allow calculator use. The second part (about 41 questions) provides an on-screen TI-30XS calculator. If you're not familiar with the TI-30XS, spend some time practicing with it before your assessment. There's also a formula reference sheet provided during the assessment.

What score do I need to pass GED Math?

You need a minimum score of 145 out of 200 to pass the GED Mathematical Reasoning section. Scores between 145-164 mean you've passed. Scores of 165-174 indicate 'College Ready' status, which may exempt you from placement assessments at some colleges. Scores of 175+ earn 'College Ready + Credit' status, which could earn you college credit.

How many questions are on the GED Math section?

The GED Mathematical Reasoning section has 46 questions total. You get 115 minutes to complete them, which works out to about 2.5 minutes per question. Questions come in several formats: multiple choice (most common), fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, and drop-down selections. Don't spend too long on any single question -- flag difficult ones and come back if you have time.

What if I struggle with math? Can I still pass the GED?

Absolutely. Many people who feel shaky about math still pass the GED Math section with focused preparation. Start with the basics: fractions, decimals, percentages, and order of operations. Build up to algebra from there. Use practice questions to identify exactly where you need work, and focus your study time on those specific areas. Even people who 'aren't math people' can develop these skills -- it just takes targeted practice and sometimes a tutor who can explain concepts in a way that clicks for you.

How long should I study for the GED Math section?

It depends on your starting level. If you're comfortable with basic math but rusty on algebra, 3-4 weeks of daily practice may be enough. If math has always been challenging, plan for 6-12 weeks of consistent study. The key is regular practice rather than marathon sessions. Even 30 minutes a day of focused practice with realistic questions is better than occasional 3-hour cramming sessions.
